Bactrim antibiotic

Bactrim is indicated for the treatment of initial episodes of uncomplicated urinary tract infections
Bactrim is a combination of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole, a sulfa drug. It eliminates bacteria that cause various infections, including infections of the urinary tract, lungs (pneumonia), ears, and intestines. It also is indicated to treat 'travelers' diarrhea.' Antibiotics will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections.

A pyrimidine inhibitor of dihydrofolate reductase, it is an antibacterial related to pyrimethamine. The interference with folic acid metabolism may cause a depression of hematopoiesis. It is potentiated by sulfonamides and the trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole combination is the form most often used. It is sometimes used alone as an antimalarial. Trimethoprim resistance has been reported.

Bactrim comes as a tablet and a liquid to take by mouth. It usually is taken two times a day but may be taken up to four times a day for severe lung infections. Drink a full glass of water with each dose.

Shake the liquid well before each use to mix the prescription evenly.

Bactrim, a synthetic antiinfective agent, is used to treat and prevent urinary tract infections, diarrhea, and, when combined with either sulfamethoxazole or dapsone, Pneumocystis carinii infections.
